The
Opportunity
The Department of Pathology and
Laboratory Medicine of the Weill Medical College of
Cornell
University
is seeking an Academic Surgical Pathologist with a subspecialty in
genitourinary pathology, for full-time appointment at the Assistant Professor
or Associate Professor level. The
candidate will join the busy Anatomic Pathology Division of a top-ranked
clinical and medical research center, one with increasing case
volumes and expanding academic programs in uropathology.

for students to intensify their pursuit of Cornell's triple mission of
education, research, and patient care.

The
Department
The Department of Pathology and
Laboratory Medicine is a complete teaching and clinical facility located at
the main campus of the
Medical
College
on the Upper East Side of
Manhattan. The
Pathology Department includes more that 85 clinical and research faculty and
supports a full academic curriculum for the University's medical students, as
well as academic research, clinical pathology and clinical consulting at
NewYork-
Presbyterian
Hospital
.
New York-Presbyterian Hospital,
the major clinical facility of the
Medical
College
, is an 824-bed teaching hospital centrally located in a highly sophisticated
medical community including the Hospital for Special Surgery, the
Memorial
Sloan-Kettering
Cancer
Center
and the
Rockefeller
University
.
The
Anatomic Pathology Division
The Anatomic Pathology Division is composed of 32 anatomic pathologists
currently handling an annual volume of 50,000 surgical specimens, 125
post-mortem examinations, 45,000 cytological specimens, and 3,400 fine needle
aspirations. The anatomic
pathology service is partially sub specialized so as to permit members of the
faculty to maintain broad exposure to most organ systems while expanding their
diagnostic expertise and scholarly accomplishments in an area of sub
specialization.
The anatomic pathology facilities are thoroughly modern.
All faculty offices, sign-out rooms, conference rooms, the house
staff/fellows room and most laboratory facilities have been completely
renovated during the past five years.
The anatomic pathology faculty is supported by Immunopathology and
Molecular Pathology Laboratories dedicated to translational research.
Excellent collaborative research opportunities exist with the recently
expanded Molecular Pathology Laboratory and with the numerous independent
research laboratories within the Department, the

College
and at our neighboring institutions,
Rockefeller
University
and
Memorial
Sloan-Kettering
Cancer
Center
.
The
Chairman
Dr. Daniel Knowles was appointed
in 1994 as the David D. Thompson Professor and Chairman of Pathology and
Laboratory Medicine of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and as
Pathologist-in-Chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Knowles is internationally recognized for his diagnostic expertise
and for his many scholarly accomplishments in hematopathology.
He previously served as Chief of Surgical Pathology at the Columbia
University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and received additional
scientific training at the
Rockefeller
University
. Under his leadership, the
Department has achieved substantial growth and success in practice activity,
clinical laboratory services and extramural research funding.
The Department and the associated laboratories now employ more than 600
people.
The
Candidate
The successful candidate should
possess strong diagnostic skills and be capable of participating in the
service responsibilities of a large, busy and demanding anatomic pathology
service.
A strong commitment to an
academic career and to publishing original papers in his or her chosen area of
sub specialization.
A similar commitment and
interest in resident education and medical student teaching is also necessary.
Established diagnostic expertise in the GU sub specialization
and a record of scholarly publications and experience in translational
research and molecular pathology is highly preferred.
However, candidates completing a fellowship program in the GU sub
specialization will also be considered.
Board certification in anatomic pathology and eligibility for
unrestricted medical licensure in
New
York
State
is
required.
