Leadership Challenge

Many contemporary studies of the future of U.S. Medical Schools have cited the growing challenge of meeting the need for leaders, now and in the future.  The need is driven by the fact that many physicians in leadership roles are at or beyond normal retirement age.

The challenge is compounded by the reluctance of younger MD's and MD/Ph.D.'s to seek leadership opportunities.

In the meantime, dynamic changes are occurring at an increasingly rapid pace in the field of medicine.  These changes will impact current and future leaders of Medical Schools, including:

bulletThe NIH challenge to change the treatment paradigm of medicine to be more predictive, personalized and preemptive.
bulletThe need to continue to move medical research, diagnosis and treatment to genomic levels and beyond.
bulletThe need to raise annual endowment, research and practice funding levels at every institution.
bulletThe demands to train future physicians and scientists to successfully work in and lead multi- and inter-disciplinary teams on clinical and translational research, as well as teaching and patient care.
bulletThe need to attract and retain an increasing number of the best and brightest students from around the world to the field of medicine.

Meeting the leadership challenge will require the use of every available resource.
