Gail
L. Woods, M.D.
As
Director - Infectious Disease Laboratory
Department
of Pathology,
Associated
Regional and University Pathologists, Inc.
(ARUP Laboratories)
Gail L. Woods, M.D., has
joined the University of Utah School of Medicine, Department of
Pathology, ARUP Laboratories as Director Infectious Disease
Laboratory. The
appointment of Dr. Woods was recently announced by Carl
Kjeldsberg, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Pathology and
President and Chief Executive Officer of ARUP Laboratories and
by Harry Hill, M.D., Professor and Associate Chair of Pathology
and Division Chief of Clinical Pathology at the University of
Utah School of Medicine. Also,
she will join the faculty of the School of Medicine as Professor
in the Department of Pathology.
Dr. Woods assumed her responsibilities on August 1, 2003.
As Director, Dr. Woods
serves as a key member of the Department of Pathology.
She is responsible for providing technical, clinical
administrative, teaching and academic leadership for over 85
employees in the Infectious Disease Laboratory.
Previously, Dr. Woods
served as Associate Director of the Medical Communications
Department, Infectious Disease with Merck & Co. in West
Point, PA. With
Merck, her work primarily concerned worldwide clinical trials of
Merck drug products that combat infectious diseases.
Earlier, Dr. Woods held
an appointment as Professor and Director, Clinical Microbiology
in the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas
Medical Branch in Galveston, TX.
While there, she held joint appointments in the
Departments of Internal Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology,
and Family Medicine.
Prior to her move to
Texas, Dr. Woods was Professor and Medical Director of
Laboratories at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and,
earlier, held positions of increasing responsibility with the
University of Nebraska Medical Center.
She also served as a Consultant to the Nebraska State
Department of Health.
Dr. Woods serves as
Chairperson of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory
Standards (NCCLS) Subcommittee on Antimycobacterial
Susceptibility Testing. She
is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of
Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and in the
subspecialty of Medical Microbiology.
Dr. Woods is a member of
the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American
Society for Microbiology, the College of American Pathologists
and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
She is the author of over 125 articles, numerous book
chapters, and serves on the Editorial Boards of the American
Journal of Clinical Pathology, the Journal of Clinical
Microbiology, and Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious
Disease, Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
She received a B.S.,
Chemistry, summa cum laude, from Beloit College in
Wisconsin, Phi Beta Kappa.
She earned a Medical Degree from Indiana University
School of Medicine. Dr.
Woods served as a Pathology Resident at Methodist Hospital in
Indianapolis, IN, and at the University of South Florida in
Tampa, FL where she was Chief Resident.
She completed a Microbiology Fellowship at Cleveland
Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH.
In joining ARUP
Laboratories, Dr. Woods will become part of a premier national
reference laboratory and a full-service laboratory for the
University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.
She will join an expanding staff of more than 1,400
technical and administrative staff, in addition to her academic
responsibilities with the School of Medicine, Department of
Pathology.
