Professor and Director of the Anatomic Pathology Division

Zoran Gatalica, M.D., D.Sc. has been appointed Professor and Director of the Anatomic Pathology Division in the Department of Pathology at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The appointment is effective on August 1, 2002.
As Director, Dr. Gatalica will supervise all aspects of the Anatomic Pathology Division. In addition to his teaching responsibilities and to mentoring the division’s faculty, he will be working to expand the scope of surgical pathology, cytopathology and autopsy pathology services offered by the Department of Pathology at Creighton University Medical Center (Saint Joseph Hospital), the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and other affiliated hospitals. Also, he will work closely with the Creighton Medical Laboratories to expand outreach testing by the laboratory.
Dr. Gatalica was educated at the School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb in Croatia where he received an M.D. degree. He received a D.Sc. degree from the School of Natural Sciences, also at the University of Zagreb. Dr. Gatalica spent a year as a Research Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt, Germany. At Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Pathology and completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University, where he served as Chief Resident.
In Dr. Gatalica’s previous appointment at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) he served as Associate Professor and as the Interim Director of Surgical Pathology. In addition to resident and student teaching, he had an active mentorship with senior medical students, residents, and fellows in surgical pathology. He began his affiliation with The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston as an Attending Pathologist in the Division of Surgical Pathology and as Director of Immunohistochemistry.
In research, Dr. Gatalica has a special interest in breast pathology, with a focus in the area of ancillary techniques in diagnostic pathology, including immunohistochemistry. He has participated in two national collaborative study groups, the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. He has served as Principal Investigator on numerous contracts and grants and as Co-Investigator on funded, collaborative research. While with The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston he received the “Office of the Vice President for Research Award” for the establishment of the UTMB Human Tissue Bank.
He has written or co-authored over 40 articles in peer reviewed publications. He has served as an editorial reviewer for the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Journal of Urologic Pathology, Modern Pathology, Journal of Clinical Pathology, Cancer, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Laboratory Medicine and Cancer Detection and Prevention.
He is a member of the College of American Pathologists, the American Association for Cancer Research, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the International Society of Breast Pathology, the International Society of Urological Pathology, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Dr. Gatalica’s experience in surgical pathology and in mentoring of faculty and students make him an attractive leader on Dr. Brumback’s outstanding team in the Department of Pathology at the Creighton University Medical Center.
